Rosie's Chocolate Bundt for Kulvir's Day

December 12, 2017

This chocolate Bundt cake is popular in Brightborough of late, especially in High Town where gardeners make sure to keep cocoa on hand for demanding buyers. Even in Attaway though, Rosie knows some people who can get us in Attaway some cocoa for a good price.

Bundts in the Brightborough area are traditionally served at major community events and celebrations. Since the days of Brightborough’s inception, these cakes were traditionally decorated with flowers, and seasonal fruits. Now, if you can afford it, powdered sugar or a glaze. Comes in all sorts of flavors and shapes, and you best bet that those fine looking geometric designs coming out of High Town's patisseries are being copied all over the city in bakeries and homes alike.  Kulvir's Day is all about community, and it takes a neighborhood to make a cake - literally! The tradition is to bring people together to make cakes for Kulvir's Day. Even if you have a cup of flour, you go to your neighbor and ask if they have a cup of flour, and they come to you to ask for milk, so on and so forth.

People, when they started up here in these woods, brought that love of cake and finer things in life with them, however they made it here to Attaway still. Sometimes we even get some of those fancy molds that look like the the tall buildings an archways, making people think of back home. Maybe people around here like to put a little Brew in the recipe for a kick, but that's just a rumor, right? Rosie, since she's doing most of the community cooking around here, has got a collection of recipes going for the colder seasons when all we want is small dose of comfort.

Most of the recipes Rosie makes come right from old family traditions, but this one's a little bit pricey in Attaway since we don't have as much in the way of farms, markets, and such.  This makes this a popular choice for Kulvir's Day, since no one person has to go out and get all the ingredients themselves. You lot can make the recipe if you want, or just give some stuff to Rosie so she makes one for us, and dig in!

CHOCOLATE BUNDT CAKE
  • 1 cup brewed coffee

  • 1 cup unsalted butter

  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 2 cups sugar

  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda

  • 3/4 teaspoon salt

  • 2 cups Flour

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1/2 cup sour cream or yogurt

  • Powdered sugar for the top

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.

  • Place the coffee, butter, and cocoa in a small saucepan. Heat, stirring, until the butter melts. Remove from the heat, and whisk until smooth. Let the mixture cool for 10 minutes.

  • While the chocolate is cooling, put the sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and flour into a mixing bowl, whisking to combine.

  • Pour the cooled chocolate mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients, and mix until thoroughly combined. Scrape the bottom and sides of the bowl, and mix again to incorporate any residue.

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the vanilla, eggs, and sour cream or yogurt. Mix into the chocolate batter, stirring until thoroughly combined.

  • Thoroughly grease the pan and then cover in flour. Pour the batter in. Bake the cake for 50 to 55 minutes, or until a long toothpick or skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.

  • Let it cool for 10 minutes, then decorate with the powdered sugar.
